A massive 10-foot-tall tunnel has been located on the border between Gaza and Egypt, designed for the passage of vehicles, has been located on the Philadelphi Route, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) say.
The tunnel was being used by Hamas terrorists to smuggle weapons, the Associated Press reports.
The IDF, which has already destroyed dozens of tunnels in the area, pledged to continue uncovering and disabling such routes.
This discovery comes amid rising fears of a full-scale war in the Middle East as the conflict in Gaza, which broke out last October, continues. The situation has recently escalated following the assasination of a senior Hezbollah commander in Lebanon and Hamas’ top political leader in Iran in late July. Tehran and its allies have accused Israel and threatened retaliation.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, declaring that the country is already engaged in a “multi-front war” with Iran and its proxies, has stated Israel’s readiness for any scenario.
The US, concerned by the rising tensions, has urged Israel to pursue a ceasefire to prevent a wider regional conflict. In addition, the Pentagon announced the deployment of a fighter jet squadron and the continued presence of an aircraft carrier in the Middle East.
The US Embassy in Lebanon has advised its citizens to depart the country as soon as possible, urging them to book any available flights due to flight cancellations and suspensions.
