Democratic Party presidential nominee Harris has surpassed Republican candidate Donald Trump in terms of public support, a recent survey by CBS News and the polling firm YouGov has shown.
As per the poll, 50% of Americans would vote for Harris in a hypothetical presidential election, compared with 49% in favor of Trump.
In particular:
- 34% of Harris supporters would choose her out of personal sympathy;
- 41% – to oppose Trump as a potential head of state;
- 24% would pick Harris as a candidate of the Democratic Party.
Trump’s supporters have challenged CBS News and YouGov’s findings, alleging data manipulation in the survey. They argue that the study was impacted by ideological bias, weighting results based on such factors as age, partisanship, and race to create a distorted outcome.
Earlier this week, Trump said that he had agreed to participate in a televised debate with Harris via Fox News on September 4. When incumbent President Joe Biden decided to withdraw from the presidential race on July 21, Trump had a lead of 45.2% to Biden’s 41.2%. Harris was declared the Democratic presidential nominee on August 3 after she secured enough votes from Democratic delegates in a virtual roll call.
The US presidential election will take place on November 5, 2024. By that time, Biden will be 82 years old, Trump will be 78, and Harris will be 60.
